A magical night of classic New Orleans jazz, with renowned New Orleans jazz musicians Gregg Stafford (trumpet) and Dr. Michael White (clarinet)
An important annual jazz event for Toronto fans, this evening will pay tribute to the unique musical and cultural heritage that is New Orleans, and bring a little New Orleans sizzle to Toronto in a cold month.
It is a rare and unprecedented privilege and honour to be able to present both Dr Michael White and Gregg Stafford together, directly from New Orleans for one night only.Dr. Michael White is a jazz clarinetist, band leader, composer, jazz historian and musical educator. Scott Yanow, a jazz critic, said in a review that White “displays the feel and spirit of the best New Orleans clarinetists.” Michael is a classically trained musician who began his jazz musical career as a teenager playing for Doc Paulin’s Brass Band in New Orleans. He has led several bands in the New Orleans area, including The Original Liberty Jazz Band and has accompanied various artists on other recording projects.
Gregg Stafford is a trumpet player who rose up through the ranks of New Orleans traditional brass bands to front his own band, The Jazz Hounds. A New Orleans school teacher by day, Gregg has been a regular in the Preservation Hall house band, and continues to be featured annually at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and other New Orleans jazz landmarks.
Backing will be a stellar band representing the best of local Toronto classic jazz bands (Happy Pals, Silverleaf, Don Valley Stompers, New Orleans Connection All Stars, and Magnolia Brass Band):
