About ‘Sisters of Swing’:
Sisters of Swing brings together five of Toronto’s popular female jazz musicians, all of whom are bandleaders, composers and swingin’ performers in their own right! Alison Young (sax), Marie Goudy (trumpet), Roberta Hunt (piano), Lauren Falls (bass), and Julia Cleveland (drums) make up this energetic quintet.
**Partner Draw Prelims ($5 at the Door)
This year at Lindyworks, we’re excited to once again be running a Partner Draw competition! This is a social dance competition where you are randomly partnered with other dancers to show off your lindy hop skills. You can enter the competition at the door of the Friday night dance.
The prelims will happen on Friday night during the first band break. During the prelims, you will dance with randomly assigned partners for three songs. Rotations will happen between each song, each varying in tempo and style. Judging will be on an individual basis.
Finals will be danced to the live band during the second band set on the Saturday night. For the finals, you will be randomly assigned a partner. There will be a short all skate song, followed by a song where you will be featured in 2 spotlights. Judging will be based on partnerships.
PRIZES: This year we are excited to be offering passes to O-Town Showdown 2020 and Cat’s Corner Exchange 2019 as prizes for this competition.
SATURDAY: TLH’s Lindyworks Swing Dance Party w/ ‘Martin Loomer & The Stray Horns’, Partner Draw Finals & Special Performances (Dancers Guaranteed)
Location: Dovercourt House-2nd Floor (805 Dovercourt Rd)
Time: 7:00pm & 8:00pm Beginner Swing Dance Lessons
9:00pm-1:00am Swing Dance (Special Performances during first band break, Prelim Finals W/ Band at 2nd Band Set)
Cost: $20/ $15 for Students at the Door (incl in weekend pass) and you don’t pay extra for the 2 beginner lessons.
ABOUT Martin Loomer & The Stray Horns:
Martin Loomer, Toronto’s noted guitarist/arranger/bandleader, is thrilled to be debuting the offshoot of his renowned Orange Devils big band at Lindyworks 2019. Martin has been recreating and reviving the swing music of the 1930’s and beyond for forty years, including lengthy stints with Jim Galloway’s Big Band and the Canadian Tribute to Glenn Miller. He.founded the Orange Devils in 2009, and now brings the eight piece Stray Horns for a PREMIERE performance at Lindyworks.
With musicians drawn from the crème de la crème of Toronto’s jazz community, the band will feature versions of some of the Devils most popular pieces by Ellington, Basie, Henderson, and Webb.
NOTE: Martin is also scoring numbers just for this event that you won’t hear any band anywhere,playing. Guaranteed to be swinging!
